The Weeping Princess
The 'weeping princess' tear is seen under Princess Elizabeth's right eye.
Found in Plate 1, Row 3 Column 1 in the upper right pane.
There are at two theories as to the origin of this variety
1) Plate dented when a wrench fell on it (C.A. Scadding. World Stamp Digest August 1940 - page 251)
2) Piece of tin foil/silver paper (used to wrap plates before use) stuck on plate (R.M. Angus. Popular Stamps
September 1949 - page 14).
Both authors claim to have received this information from a reliable source. The first theory appears to be the most likely as any item adhering to the plate would produce a white rather than a coloured spot.
Three varieties noted.
a) Classic "Weeping Princess." Vast majority of stamps.

c) "Tear drop moved." Moved marginally (1/2mm) to right of usual position. Extremely rare. Position not confirmed.
