Registered letter from Ascension to Mauritius
Ascension Island is a 35 sq. mile island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean (see map - A). It has been under British rule since 1815. It has no indigenous population. The Island was managed by the Eastern Telegraph Company (renamed the Cable and Wireless company in 1934) between 1922 and 1964. The population, mainly from nearby St. Helena, tended to be transient and were employees of the Company.
Mail service for Ascension was provided by the Union-Castle Line which undertook a "Round Africa" service. This service left London once a fortnight going down the West Coast of Africa via Las Palmas, Ascension and St. Helena returning to London up the East Coast via the Suez Canal alternating with trips going down the East Coast of Africa first, returning up the West Coast.
