Special Studies of the South African Varieties

A number of the South African stamps lend themselves to a more in-depth study. The three most commonly studied are:

Cleft Skull. Best known South African variety. Differing characteristics related to printing history.
"8" in jubileum/jubilee. The figure 8 appears to be substituted for the letter B in some of the stamps
The Scratches of "Suid Afrika." Rows 16 and 16 have scratches through Suid Afrika. Like the Cleft Skull one can trace the printing history of the scratches.
