India

Most Silver Jubilee rocket mail flights occurred in India. Stephen Smith, Secretary of the Indian Airmail Society, was an avid rocket fan and was responsible for overseeing all 16 flights. The first flights were at Diamond Head on March 23rd and the last at Burnpur, northwest of Calcutta, on June 29th, 1935. Most rocket mail flights occurred in Sikkim, a small state near the Nepal. The covers contained no contents and bore special Silver Jubilee Commemorative labels. Postcards were similarly adorned. Most of the covers and many of the labels were signed by Smith. Of interest is the fact that the proceeds of the sales of the covers and labels were handed over to the Royal Silver Jubilee Fund and later to the Quetta earthquake disaster fund. A more detailed description of the various flights with illustrations can be viewed.

It shows the special yellow and blue commemorative label. It is signed by Stephen Smith. Mr. D.C. King was the Customs Officer at Diamond Harbour.   The nine pies stamp, used on most covers is cancelled March 23, 1935 at Diamond Head. It is not clear whether this cover is from the first or second rocketgram firing on that day.
