History of Company
Founded by Mathew Ewing in Rochester, New York (1866) who devised a technique for making kerosene (paraffin oil) by distilling crude oil in a vacuum. Purchased by John D. Rockefeller (1879) and made part of Standard Trust but retaining its own name.

Vacuum Oil opened offices in Australia (1895) and New Zealand (1896) as part of its expansion into Far East. In 1931 the company merged with Standard Oil of New York (Socony) and two years later merged again with the other arm of Standard Trust to be known as Standard-Vacuum (Stanvac) operating in 50 different countries. In 1962 the company was dissolved and became Mobil Oil. Today the company is part of ExxonMobil.
