Perfins of Canada
Rectangular stamps can be placed in a Perforating Machine 8 different ways (Face up from any of the four sides or gummed side up from any of the four sides). Johnson and Tomasson (Canadian Stamps with Perforated Initials) use a simple classification system to identify the position of the perfin die.

Positions 1 to 4
Perfin insignia is readable as normal looking at the stamp. Position 1 is the commonest position. Each position is a 90 degree rotation from the previous position.

Positions 5 - 8
Perfin insignia is read as normal looking from the gummed side.
