History
Barbados derives it name from Los Barbados ('bearded-ones') by the Portuguese explorer, Pedro a Campo, who noted the unusual appearance of the bearded fig -trees on the island . It was originally inhabited by Arawaks around 1200. They were conquered by the Caribs who were decimated by small pox and slavery. The British occupied the empty island in 1625. It became a colony growing sugar, tobacco and cotton. Most of the work was done by slaves brought from West Africa. Slavery was abolished in 1834. In 1962 the colony obtained self-governing status and became fully independent four years later.
