Edward, Duke of Wales, was born on June 23, 1894. Following the death of King George on January 20, 1936 he ascended to the throne as King Edward VIII. Eleven months later, on December 10, 1936, he abdicated stating "I have found it impossible to carry on the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge the duties of King as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love." He subsequently lived overseas in exile, dying on May 28, 1972.
