Booklet Printing
Booklet sheets were printed in a different format from the stamp sheets. Two panes of 120 stamps each were printed at a time. Each pane was divided into two blocks (see below). One block consisted of 4 columns and 20 rows of stamps. Half the stamps were printed upright and the other half upside down ( tête-bêche). The second block was made up of two columns of 20 rows of stamps. Figure one below illustrates the layout. This configuration permitted each booklet pane of 4 stamps to have a binding margin at the left when the stamps were upright.
The above description explains why half the booklet stamps have inverted watrermarks.
