Great Britain Slogans
Postal slogans with automatic stamp cancelling machines introduced in Great Britain in 1911.
Most official postal slogan dies used connected with either national campaigns or advertising of important national/international events.
- Limited number of dies were made of each slogan.
- Post Office tended to distribute them so as to maximize impact. At the end of each period of use dies returned to Post Office.
- Dies usually fitted to machines at sorting offices in large towns and cities. The Universal cancelling machine (Pitney-Bowes)
comprised the vast majority of machines in use in 1935.
-A few post offices continued to use their existing cancelling machines, the “Hey-Dolphin” (International) and “Krag”
cancelling machines (Slogans during the 1935 Silver Jubilee period emanating from these latter two machines would only
occur if a previously used slogan was re-issued.
- Five postal slogans identified as being in use between May and December 1935.
- Ten Telephone slogans, initially introduced in 1931, were probably also used at a few post offices during 1935 (It is not clear
exactly when and where these latter slogans may have been used.
